Luxury in the World

Laos is often referred to as the 'land of a million elephants' or the 'sleeping beauty of South East Asia'. Situated in the heart of French Indo-China, landlocked between Thailand, Burma (Myanmar), China, Vietnam and Cambodia, travellers to Laos will find themselves captivated by the mist-veiled mountains, rivers running through untouched forests and monks trailing along pathways in search of their morning alms.

Laos, Michelin's recommendations
The former "kingdom of a million elephants", which has been governed by a single political party since 1975, is gradually beginning to develop an environmentally friendly tourist industry. Laos, which boasts a history dating back to before the Christian era, and is strongly influenced by the Khmer and Dvaravati civilisations, has suffered long periods of foreign domination, firstly by the kingdom of Siam and later by France, as can often be seen in its urban architecture. Most importantly, the country was damaged and divided by the Vietnam War, the scars of which are still apparent, especially along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Marked by this troubled past and by persistent poverty, Laos is nonetheless a gentle country with luxuriant natural landscapes, many of which have yet to be explored. Bordered to the west by the life-giving Mekong river, Laos is a long and land-locked country, surrounded by Thailand to the west, Vietnam to the east, China and Burma to the north and Cambodia to the south. Agriculture, fishing and forestry account for 80% of the activity of its multi-ethnical population, which has largely maintained its traditional way of life. To the background of Khen music (the country's national instrument), discover the capital Vientiane, renowned for its eclectic architecture, Luang Prabang, an important centre of Buddhism, the magnificent site of Vat Phu, the thousand-year-old Plain of Jars, the waterfalls of the Boloven plateau and numerous other splendid, mysterious and spiritual sights, all of which command the greatest respect and admiration.

Luxury in Asia
Asia, driven by China, is the epitome of a thrusting continent, yet one that has not turned its back on its ancient traditions. From India to Japan, from Taiwan to Singapore, the Asian ‘Dragon’ continues to exert its fascination.

Just like its world-renowned delicious cuisine, Asia is marked by a tantalising melting pot of contrasting flavours, sights and smells. A continent where communist states lie alongside democratic republics and kingdoms, where Colonial landmarks jostle for attention with skyscrapers and ancient temples, and where all the great religions rub shoulders.
Journey to Asia for fascinating glimpses into unspoilt lands and cultures, such as those found in the magical kingdom of Bhutan, world-famous sights like India's Taj Mahal, Cambodia's Angkor Wat temple, Thailand's floating markets, China's Terracotta Army and Hong Kong's neon-lit harbour; not forgetting the rainforest-fringed beaches of Malaysia, the shadow-puppeteers and dancers of Indonesia and the Colonial elegance of Vietnam's cities, which are all just as captivating.
Visitors to Asia claim that it's the everyday details that provide the most unforgettable memories of their holidays here. A rainbow of vibrant prints in the markets, the scent of aromatic spices frying on the street stalls, the sight of an elephant being ridden through the streets or the feel of the soft sand between the toes on a pristine beach.
